The Spring Festival is a traditional Chinese New Year calculated based on the lunar calendar. It is also known as New Year, Zhengdan and New Year's Day. Its celebrations are also commonly known as New Year's Eve and New Year's Eve. It is one of the four traditional festivals of the Han nationality. Since the Ming Dynasty, Chinese New Year celebrations have generally not officially ended until after the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month. In some places, New Year celebrations even end throughout the first lunar month. After the Revolution of 1911, the official calendar standard was changed from the lunar calendar to the Gregorian calendar. Chinese New Year is mostly on the same day as Korean New Year, Vietnamese New Year, Ryukyu New Year and Japanese New Year before the Meiji Restoration, while it is on the same day as Tibetan New Year and Mongolian New Year, or may be one day or one month apart.
Influenced by the cultural circle of Chinese characters, the Spring Festival is also an important festival in Southeast Asia, such as Laos, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, where many Chinese live together. In mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Korean Peninsula, Vietnam, the Philippines, Mauritius, Suriname and other places, the Lunar New Year is a legal holiday. The Chinese New Year Parade in Chinatown, Manhattan, New York, is the largest Chinese New Year event outside of Asia. Spring Festival is also a United Nations holiday.
